Ways to create an account

There are two ways to create an Instagram account. You can create a new account from the Instagram app or Instagram.com. If you already have an existing Facebook or Instagram account, you can use your existing account to create a new Instagram account. Both accounts will be added to the same Accounts Centre and have access to connected experiences

To create an account if you’re new to Instagram and you don’t have a Facebook account

  1. Download the Instagram app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Once the app has been installed, tap  Instagram logo to open it.
  3. Tap Create new account and enter your email address or mobile number, then tap Next. Note: If you sign up using email, make sure that you enter your email address correctly and choose an email address that only you can access. If you log out and forget your password, you’ll need to be able to access your emails to get back in to your Instagram account.
  4. Enter the confirmation code sent to your email address or mobile number, then tap Next.
  5. Create a password, then tap Next.
  6. Enter your birthday, then tap Next. Note: Use your own birthday, even if this account is for a business, a pet or something else. Learn more about why we ask for your birthday.
  7. Add your name, then tap Next.
  8. Create a username, then tap Next.
  9. Read Instagram’s terms and policies, then tap I agree, if you agree to the terms, to create your account.
  10. Add a profile picture, then tap Next. If you’d like to add a profile picture later, tap Skip.
  11. If you want to share your profile picture as your first post, tap  Toggle, then tap Done.

To create an account if you have a Facebook account

If you create a new Instagram account using your Facebook account, both accounts will use the same login information. You may also be able to sync profile information across your accounts, such as your name, profile picture, username and avatar. You can manage profile syncing at any time in your Accounts Centre.
    1. Download the Instagram app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
    2. Once the app has been installed, tap  Instagram logo to open it.
    3. If your Facebook account shows, you can:
  • Tap Continue as [name] to learn more about what happens when you create an Instagram account with your Facebook account.
  • Choose not to use your Facebook account and tap Create new account, then follow the steps above to create a new Instagram account.
  1. To create an Instagram account with your Facebook account, tap Yes, continue, then tap Next to sync your name, profile picture and avatar across apps. Note: You’ll be prompted to log in to your Facebook account if you’re currently logged out.
  2. If you’d like to create an Instagram account without your Facebook account, tap Continue without Facebook.
  3. Create a username, then tap Next.
  4. Read Instagram’s terms and policies, then tap I agree, if you agree to the terms, to create your account.

Two-factor authentication protects your account by requiring a code if there’s a login attempt from a device that we don’t recognise.

If any of your Instagram accounts uses two-factor authentication, you’ll be asked to enter your special login code or confirm your login attempt when logging in to any of these accounts.

Turn on two-factor authentication

  1. Click More icon, represented by a hamburgerMore in the bottom left, then click Settings iconSettings.
  2. Click See more in Accounts Centre, then click Password and security.
  3. Click Two-factor authentication, then select an account.
  4. Choose the security method that you want to add and follow the on-screen instructions.

  3. Click Two-factor authentication, then select an account.
  4. Choose the security method that you want to turn off and follow the on-screen instructions.
When you set up two-factor authentication on Instagram, you’ll be asked to choose one of three security methods:
  • Authentication app (recommended): Download an authentication app, such as Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator, to get login codes. This security method is recommended because you can add multiple devices connected to an account so that they can all get login codes. Note: Two-factor authentication through an authentication app can only be turned on using the Instagram app for Android and iPhone.
  • Text message: Instagram will send a login code to your mobile number.
  • WhatsApp: Turn on the text message security method first. Then, you can turn on the WhatsApp security method to get login codes from WhatsApp.
You’ll need to have at least one of these set up in order to use two-factor authentication.
Note: After you’ve turned on two-factor authentication, you’ll be able to see login requests and remove trusted devices. If you lose access to your phone or email address and are unable to get login codes, you can use a backup code to log in. Learn more about login codes.
Bear in mind that:
  • If you haven’t marked the device you’re using as a trusted device, you can do so when you log in from that device using two-factor authentication. This way, you won’t have to enter a security code when you log in again. Trusted devices are any device that you’ve already signed in to using two-factor authentication and have marked as trusted by tapping Trust this device.
  • You shouldn’t tap Trust this device if you’re using a public or shared device that other people you may not know can access.
  • To set up text message (SMS) two-factor authentication, you can either use a mobile number that’s already been added to your account or add a new number.
